Beerakai (Ridge gourd) Chutney


Ridge gourd – peeled,washed and cubed – 2 cups
Onions – 2 med
Green chilis – 3
Tomatoes – 2 large
Turmeric powder – 2 pinches
Tamarind – a little piece
Salt – to taste
Oil – 2 tbsp

For tempering
Oil – 2 tbsp
Mustard – 1/2 tsp
Dry chilis – 2 deseeded and diced
Curry leaves – few


1.Heat oil in a pan and add the chopped onion,green chili,ridge gourd pieces and fry 4-5 mins.
2.Add turmeric,tamarind and chopped tomatoes and stir well,add salt and cover cook till all the water evaporates.
3. Turn of heat and cool,grind coarsely and transfer into a bowl.Heat oil in a small pan and splutter mustard and add curry leaves and dry chili and add to the chutney.

This is easy and tasty….We can cook all the ingredients in a pressure cooker and mash well and temper it too.

This goes well with Kichidi,rice,dosa or chappatis as well.
